NCAA Women's Tournament: Samford to Play Duke in Nashville

The Samford women's basketball team will play Duke University Sunday (March 17) in an NCAA basketball tournament first-round game in Nashville, Tenn. Tipoff is set for 6:40 p.m. CT in Memorial Gym on the Vanderbilt University campus.

Tickets are on sale in the Samford athletics office through 5 p.m. Thursday (March 15) or by calling the athletics ticket office at (205) 726-DOGS. Tickets are $16 per person. All ticket purchases will be available from Samford officials at the Samford will call at the southeast entrance to Memorial Gym.

The game will be televised on ESPN2. The game also will be broadcast on WVSU-FM, the flagship station of the Samford sports network, with Mike Grace and Larry Long calling the action. The game can be heard worldwide on the Internet at www.samford.edu/wvsu.

"This is as good as it gets," said Samford head coach Mike Morris. "When you play basketball at Division I, men or women, this is what it is all about, having the opportunity to play in the NCAA tournament, the biggest stage at the biggest time of the year."

If Samford wins its first-round game, Samford ticket officials will return to the will call location immediately after the game to facilitate purchase of second-round game tickets. Those will purchase first-round game tickets from Samford will receive priority to purchase second-round tickets.

Samford draw a #15 seed, while Duke is seeded second. Stanford University is the top seed in the region.

Vanderbilt and Middle Tennessee State universities are playing in the other first-round game in Nashville, and Sunday's ticket includes admission to that game.

Several hundred Samford fans – students, parents, community – turned out Monday for a tournament pairings watch party in the university dining hall that featured the team, cheerleaders and pep band. Fans cheered as the replay of the Southern Conference tournament championship game ended. Louder roars greeted the appearance of the Samford-Duke pairing and Nashville location on the ESPN telecast.

Samford earned its second straight trip to the NCAA tournament by winning the SoCon championship with a 54-43 victory over Appalachian State University on March 5. The Bulldogs lost to Florida State University in their 2011 NCAA first-round game in Auburn, Ala.
