Samford Teams to Compete at SoCon Tourney
Samford University fans can follow the Bulldog basketball teams as they compete for the first time in the Southern Conference basketball tournament March 5-9 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The SoCon tournament dates to 1921 and is the oldest conference tournament in the U.S.
Fans can follow the teams on WVSU 91.1-FM or via the Internet at www.soconsports.com.
Samford staff also will be blogging from the tournament. Look for the Samford at the SoCon link at www.samford.edu.
Both teams will open tournament play on Friday, March 6, although final seedings will not be available until after regular-season games end on Feb. 28. Finals are Monday, March 9. The men’s final will be televised by ESPN at 7 p.m. EST. The women’s final will be televised by SportSouth at 3 p.m. EST. Check local listings for other televised games.
The Samford women are assured of a first-round bye as either the number one or number two seed. The team plays Chattanooga at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pete Hanna Arena for the conference regular season championship and the tournament number one seed. The two teams currently are tied for first place.
The Samford men close the regular season with a 1 p.m. CST game at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. The men will play a first round game on Friday.
Tournament tickets are available at www.samfordsports.com. The Samford Alumni Association is hosting a tournament party and pep rally Friday at 6 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel near McKenzie Arena, site of the tournament.
