Lawrence Ross to Speak at Samford Greek Life Event
Lawrence Ross will be on the Samford University campus Feb. 27 to discuss his book, The Divine Nine: The History of the African-American Fraternities and Sororities.
The 7 p.m. event will take place in Reid Chapel and is open to the public.
Samford is home to four of "The Divine Nine" fraternities and sororities: Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta.
Sponsored by Samford's Office of Greek Life, Ross will talk about his book and the roles these nine organizations have played throughout history. The book is the only-known comprehensive history of the nine African-American fraternities and sororities that are members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
Samford's Director of Greek Life Denny Bubrig said NPHC officers who decided to bring Ross to campus.
"There is a lot about the NPHC fraternities and sororities that are often assumed to be the same as the Panhellenic and IFC Greeks. My hope is that people will attend and take advantage of the opportunity to learn about the organizations and the perspective that they bring to the table," Bubrig said.
