Samford To Host March Of Dimes' 2010
Fundraising Kickoff Event
March of Dimes, the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health, will kickoff its 2010 fundraising season on Monday, February 22 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Samford University's Pete Hanna Center, with Pat Sullivan serving as emcee.
The kickoff event will precede the Samford Bulldogs vs. Georgia Southern Eagles basketball game and will encourage participation in the April 24, Birmingham Metro March for Babies event.
"This event at Samford will help jump start our efforts for our 2010 fundraising push," said Melanie Mooney, March of Dimes Division Director, North Central Division. "We thank Samford University for always being a strong supporter of our cause and especially to Dr. Andrew Westmoreland for his additional role with us this year."
Dr. Westmoreland, President of Samford University, is the 2010 Birmingham Metro March for Babies Chair. This annual event will take place Saturday, April 24, 2010 in the Mini Park of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Birmingham Metro March for Babies averages 1,500 to 2,000 participants every year, however Dr. Westmoreland wants to increase that number.
"March for Babies is such an important annual event for March of Dimes and its fundraising efforts, and we hope the kickoff event on our campus this month sets the tone for the rest of the spring," said Dr. Westmoreland. "We need to make this year bigger and better to ensure the organization knows how much support it has from the community and help it continue providing research and programs for America's expectant mothers."
The February 22 kickoff event begins at 5:30 PM at Samford University's Pete Hanna Center. Dinner will be provided by Samford, and attendees will be able to donate to March of Dimes, sign up for the April walk and discuss March of Dimes goals with on hand staff. All March of Dimes Team Captains will receive complimentary tickets to the Samford vs. Georgia Southern game, which will begin at 7:00 PM.
