Samford Places 24 On Fall Academic All-SoCon Team
SPARTANBURG, S.C.—Twenty-four Samford University student-athletes were named to the Southern Conference's 2012 Fall Academic All-Conference team, released by the conference on Friday.
To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average entering the fall season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded fall campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
The Bulldog football team had the most representatives among Samford's fall teams with eight. The soccer team placed six players on the team, while volleyball and women's cross country had four each. The men's cross country team had two representatives on the squad. The 24 Samford student-athletes posted an average GPA of 3.69.
As a conference, the women's soccer programs provided the most academic all-conference members with 79, followed by football with 58 and women's cross country with 51. Wofford led all schools with 37 members on the Academic All-Conference team. Appalachian State was second with 33, edging Elon, which had 32.
From the 12 SoCon institutions, a total of 302 student-athletes were named to the team, surpassing last year's fall total by one. Among the 302 student-athletes were at least 14 representatives from each of the 12 SoCon institutions, participating in men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.
