Office of Financial Aid - Lenders

Samford University processes Stafford and/or PLUS loan funds from the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP), as well as loan funds from private resources. In order to receive funds from one or more of these programs, please READ and follow the simple steps below:

STEP 1 File the appropriate FAFSA and review your award package via the Samford Portal; private loans do not require a FAFSA.

STEP 2 Apply for the Stafford, PLUS and/or Private loans by clicking 'APPLY HERE' below, next to the lender of your choice. FFELP loans will require a completed paper Loan Request Form, while private loans can be applied for directly online.

STEP 3 Send your completed FFELP form(s) to our office and we will certify your loan for the appropriate amount, loan period, and lender of your choice. Private loans will be certified once your credit is approved by the lender. Loan forms should be completed no later than July 1 in order for the funds to be ready for the Fall term.

STEP 4 E-Sign the FFELP Master Promissory Note (MPN) after the student receives an email notification from our office (and/or the lender); the email from our office will be sent to the student's Samford email account with instructions to e-sign the MPN. The MPN is a legal binding promissory note between you and your lender, including parent loans. It is your responsibility to make sure your loan(s) has a valid MPN on file with the lender.

LENDER SELECTION Our office completed an annual comprehensive review of Stafford, Parent PLUS, Graduate PLUS, and Private Student Loan providers in March 2009, in an effort to assist you in making informed choices on the best lender option for you, as well as to meet the U.S. Department of Education federal guidelines. This review is based on various criteria, some of which include pricing, repayment benefits, life of loan ownership, life of loan servicing, real time processing, rates of approval, processing reliability, quality of customer service, and long-term commitment to fund loans to Samford University students. Listed below are the lenders that we feel would be most beneficial to you in meeting the costs of your college education, based on these results. However, you are free to choose any lender who participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program and by no means does Samford University expect or require you to utilize any of the lenders listed below.

Please note that many lenders from previous years may not be listed, most likely because they are no longer participating in the student loan program or may be out of business. If further changes occur, we will update this listing accordingly. In addition, if you choose to use a lender that is not listed below, you will need to provide our office with contact information and a lender code so that we may process your loan(s); be aware that there may be a delay in this processing and receipt of loan funds if your lender does not participate in EFT or electronic loan processing.
